His name is Erik Bendl and he is walking across the country to raise diabetes awareness. On this trip he is walking with his dog, Nice, and his giant world ball from Kentucky to Kansas City, KS.

We saw him in Raytown on our way home on Sunday, and Justin saw him yesterday in KC. He might already be done with this trip, because he was pretty close to the end yesterday.

He is definitely a unique sight and I admire what he is doing. I imagine he’s having a pretty incredible experience and it seems like he has met a lot of friendly people on his journey.

Company picnic

Today was my company picnic at thelone summit ranch. I had never been there before and it was such a nice place. We had planned on going to church this morning and then going to the picnic later in the afternoon. We realized when we got in the car that we wouldn’t be able to make it to church in time and decided to just go on to the picnic.

Since we got there pretty early we sat by the pool in the shade for awhile. The pool area was just so beautiful and relaxing. The ranch is a private residence that is also a venue for weddings and parties. They have a large room for eating or dancing for a wedding, and then outside there is a tennis court, pool, playground, mini golf, all kinds of stuff. But around the houses there are a lot of gardens and walkways and it is just so pretty.

The pool area reminded me of the house in The graduate. It was old, well taken care of and just so romantic. It was all black and white and all around the pool there was a brick patio, at the end there was a little garden. So pretty. I could’ve stayed there all day.

Not very many people from work showed up, so it was pretty low-key. We left not long after lunch, so I was glad that we got there earlier than planned. It was a nice, relaxing time.

Big Lake

Yesterday Justin and I took a half day of vacation to go to Big Lake state park in Craig, Missouri.

We were pretty excited because it was our first trip in this:

my new jeep!

We decided to take a *small* trip (90 minutes) because it was our first real trip on the highway.

90 minutes ended up being a long trip! (it was pretty windy!) But it was fun… it was a perfect sunny day and it was nice to be able to leave work early to take off on an adventure.

We arrived there around 5, set up our campsite then walked around exploring the park for a little while. Later we went to their restaurant for a fish fry.

There wasn’t a designated place for swimming but we climbed down the bank and swam for a little while before it got dark.

We had so much fun together… but we were so hot and exhausted… sleeping in the tent wasn’t going to happen. After laying in the tent for awhile hoping it would cool off we decided to pack up and drive home! Camping overnight just wasn’t going to work.

So, we drove home late last night. We slept in this morning and now we’re getting around to starting the weekend!

Wild strawberries

I made a very exciting discovery in our backyard this evening… wild strawberries!

While making dinner I took some corn husks out to the compost bin and on my way back to the house found a little patch of them.

I haven’t seen them since I was a kid at my grandma’s house. I remember eating them then, but I don’t think I’m going to eat any of these (I’m not exactly sure they’re safe to eat… or if they’re really even the same thing!)

But they’re really cute and summery and it was just an unexpected, beautiful find.
